A recent review of the medical literature indicates that the median incidence of streptococcal pharyngitis is 1764 per 100,000 children [19]. Considering the small subset of patients who experience streptococcal infections and that these cases rarely develop late complications, such as rheumatic fever, the widespread prescription of antibiotics for sore throats has become increasingly criticized.
