Quantifying Public Engagement With Science and Malinformation on COVID-19 Vaccines: Cross-Sectional Study

Altmetrics measure the broader impact of scholarly works by analyzing social media and media engagement beyond traditional citations. They track mentions on social media, news, blogs, policy documents, and academic tools like Mendeley. Data are gathered using persistent identifiers (typically DOIs), which are weighted by source to generate composite altmetric scores.

Online Visibility and Scientific Relevance of Strabismus Research: Bibliometric Analysis

Online Visibility and Scientific Relevance of Strabismus Research: Bibliometric Analysis

Bibliometric analyses using altmetrics and other scientometrics have been conducted previously in the field of ophthalmic research to evaluate publication trends [6], disruptiveness of papers [7], or research productivity [8]. To date, however, there have been no such analyses within the subspecialty of strabismus, despite the pervasiveness of the disease.

Global COVID-19 Policy Engagement With Scientific Research Information: Altmetric Data Study

Altmetrics examine, among other things, the influence of scientific research findings on media, documents, and other types of writings. Traditional citation tracking and evaluation rely on peer-reviewed publications since citations are regarded as a sign of research impact, whereas altmetrics involve nonacademic public behavior, such as social media.

Information and Scientific Impact of Advanced Therapies in the Age of Mass Media: Altmetrics-Based Analysis of Tissue Engineering

Information and Scientific Impact of Advanced Therapies in the Age of Mass Media: Altmetrics-Based Analysis of Tissue Engineering

Consequently, a new kind of metrics, called alternative metrics or altmetrics, has been proposed to obtain, evaluate, and characterize scientific information through data content in social media [16]. Altmetrics describes a web-based metrics used to understand the impact of publications and other scholarly materials by using data from social media platforms (ie, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, blogs, Mendeley Readers, Cite ULike, Reddit, and Wikipedia, among others) [17].

Evaluating Scholars’ Impact and Influence: Cross-sectional Study of the Correlation Between a Novel Social Media–Based Score and an Author-Level Citation Metric

The widespread use of social media by health care stakeholders has led to the development of alternative impact metrics, also known as “altmetrics” [6]. The altmetrics approach offers new ways to analyze and inform scholarship [7]. It complements rather than replaces traditional indicators of a scholar’s performance [8]. Altmetrics have even been adopted aggressively by traditional publishing companies [9].

The Use of Social Media to Increase the Impact of Health Research: Systematic Review

The Use of Social Media to Increase the Impact of Health Research: Systematic Review

A basic search for systematic reviews on Altmetrics on Google Scholar, on April 2, 2019 (in titles of articles) yielded only 24 results, 3 of which were reviews: 1 systematic review mapping the evidence for marketing research [20] and 2 literature reviews on Altmetrics used for generic scholarly research output [21,22]. In terms of health research, the review evidence is also limited.

Comparison of Traditional Citation Metrics and Altmetrics Among Dermatology Journals: Content and Correlational Analysis Study

More recently, social media and online news sources have become important avenues for dissemination of research, resulting in the emergence of an alternative metric system known as altmetrics [4,5]. Altmetrics is data that can explain both the nature and volume of attention that research receives. It measures how many people have engaged with and shared research and allows the researchers or publishers to see in what manner it was shared.
