An eHealth Project on Invasive Pneumococcal Disease: Comprehensive Evaluation of a Promotional Campaign

Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus, is an important human pathogen. It can cause both noninvasive (eg, otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia) and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), which is described as the presence of pneumococcus in normally sterile body fluids. IPD has a variety of clinical presentations, the most common being meningitis, bacteremia, and bacteremic pneumonia [1,2]. It has been estimated [3] that approximately 1.6 million people worldwide die of IPD each year.
