Reliability and Validity of Noncognitive Ecological Momentary Assessment Survey Response Times as an Indicator of Cognitive Processing Speed in People’s Natural Environment: Intensive Longitudinal Study

Reliability and Validity of Noncognitive Ecological Momentary Assessment Survey Response Times as an Indicator of Cognitive Processing Speed in People’s Natural Environment: Intensive Longitudinal Study

We attempt to capitalize on the growing use of the ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology in behavioral health research [6-8] and propose a novel approach for assessing a central cognitive measure, processing speed, using EMA survey paradata. Paradata are data about the response process, such as response times (RTs) when answering survey questions [9,10], that can be passively captured alongside survey responses.

Correlates of Engagement Within an Online HIV Prevention Intervention for Single Young Men Who Have Sex With Men: Randomized Controlled Trial

Correlates of Engagement Within an Online HIV Prevention Intervention for Single Young Men Who Have Sex With Men: Randomized Controlled Trial

Researchers have promoted the use of paradata metrics for measuring engagement with DHIs [9,12]. Paradata can be defined as automatically generated process data that capture participants’ actions within an application [13-15], and can be transformed to characterize the amount, frequency, duration, and depth of engagement across and within DHIs [9].

Using Smartphone Sensor Paradata and Personalized Machine Learning Models to Infer Participants’ Well-being: Ecological Momentary Assessment

Using Smartphone Sensor Paradata and Personalized Machine Learning Models to Infer Participants’ Well-being: Ecological Momentary Assessment

Data collected in this way are usually referred to as the paradata of the survey. According to Kreuter [46], paradata are behavioral by-products of computer-assisted data collection that are often neglected in studies. In the past, they have primarily been used to reduce survey error within the total survey error framework [47]; for example, by uncovering participants’ insecurity while responding to particular survey items [48].

We also collected paradata during the study period, along with instrumental and subjective data. During the 2-month trial, we collected a total of 478 records from 11 patients, 243 for the first month and 235 for the second month. As described before, a WHMS is a longitudinal survey that is quite different from a panel survey in terms of duration and contents; therefore, we needed more specific indicators than the well-known and consolidated indicators available in the literature [12,34,35].
