Mastication and deglutition muscles such as the masseter and tongue are visible in brain MRI scans [10,11]. These muscles can reflect not only age-associated general muscle decline but also systemic processes due to highly complex interactions with the immune system and the inflammatory response, the nervous system, and the crossroads of several components of the frailty syndrome [12,13].

Specifically, Kim et al [30] reported lower cross-sectional areas and greater fat infiltration of the paravertebral muscles in patients with vertebral fractures than in those without fractures. This implies that not only the density and quality of the bones are correlated with the risk of fractures but also the quality of the muscles supporting and communicating with the bones [17].

Alternatively, therapies targeting the UA muscles have been developed to decrease the disease severity [13-15]. Myofunctional therapy is a noninvasive approach in which patients are tasked with exercises of the lips, tongue, or both to target oropharyngeal functions [16]. It has been observed that myofunctional therapy may decrease the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) by 50% in adults and by 62% in children [16]. For myofunctional therapy to be effective, the patient must perform the exercises daily.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which comprise a wide range of inflammatory and degenerative conditions affecting the muscles, ligaments, joints, tendons, peripheral nerves, and supporting blood vessels, are widespread in many countries [1]. The burden of MSDs is substantial and increasing globally, particularly in the most economically deprived countries [2].

The dose response is important because the physiological effect of uc OC in muscles from mice and humans may be different, and the concentrations used are all physiologically relevant.
Once a participant is enrolled into the trial, the study coordinator will keep in contact with him or her for the entire study period. We estimate that the dropout rate in this population will be approximately 10%. Participants may withdraw from the study at any given time.
