Since May 2022, rapidly growing numbers of human monkeypox (mpox) cases have been reported from countries where the disease was not initially endemic [1,2]. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the worldwide mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on July 23 [3]. By September 28, 2023, a total of 90,618 confirmed cases were reported across 115 countries, with 1484 confirmed cases in China.

Monkeypox (mpox), caused by the mpox virus within the genus Orthopoxvirus (family Poxviridae, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae), is an emerging zoonotic disease that results in a smallpox-like illness in humans [1,2]. The first case of mpox was reported in Zaire (current Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC) in 1970, after which it spread to other countries in Central and West Africa [1,3].

Assessing Public Interest in Mpox via Google Trends, YouTube, and TikTok

With the advent of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), it is crucial for patients to better understand its symptoms and dermatological presentations. Social media platforms are accessible sources that can enhance disease awareness and knowledge of treatment options [1]. Unfortunately, video content on social media is not screened prior to dissemination, so misinformation on Mpox has increased tremendously.

Efficacy and Safety of the Smallpox Vaccine for Postexposure Prophylaxis in Monkeypox: Protocol for an Open-Labeled, Single-Armed Study

Monkeypox is a zoonotic pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus of the family Poxviridae. It was initially isolated from a cynomolgus monkey in 1958 and was named monkeypox [1]. However, in November 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) changed the name to “mpox” as its natural host is considered to be a rodent [2]. Mpox circulates within a transmission cycle involving rodents and monkeys in tropical rainforests spanning from Central Africa to West Africa [3].

Trends in Media Coverage During the Monkeypox Outbreak: Content Analysis

Monkeypox has been spreading in nonendemic countries since May 2022 [1]. The media significantly influences how people react to the spread of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases [2]. Protective motivation theory (PMT) posits that people protect themselves using perceptions from 4 cognitive appraisals: perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, outcome efficaciousness, and self-efficacy [3].
