In the Shadow of Medicine: The Glaring Absence of Occurrence Records of Human-Hosted Biodiversity

In the Shadow of Medicine: The Glaring Absence of Occurrence Records of Human-Hosted Biodiversity

To gain an overview of the main environments colonized by microbial species (including bacterial, archaeal, and eukaryotic microbial species), researchers have used the three-level environment classification system associated with 23,828 samples collected during the Earth Microbiome Project as a proxy [2].

Methodology for Biological Sample Collection, Processing, and Storage in the Newcastle 1000 Pregnancy Cohort: Protocol for a Longitudinal, Prospective Population-Based Study in Australia

The microbiome plays a central role in health and disease, contributing to the development and regulation of metabolic and immune functions [47,48]. From birth, the microbiome changes in response to host and environmental factors [49]. Disruptions in the early life microbiome can negatively impact a wide range of health outcomes [50,51].

Nourishing the Infant Gut Microbiome to Support Immune Health: Protocol of SUN (Seeding Through Feeding) Randomized Controlled Trial

Nourishing the Infant Gut Microbiome to Support Immune Health: Protocol of SUN (Seeding Through Feeding) Randomized Controlled Trial

The early stages of gut microbiome development are marked by unique temporal microbe uptake, colonization, and selection, all of which have variable functional characteristics throughout time. This carefully managed microbial sequence begins at birth and continues until the microbiome acquires an adult-like makeup and function around 3 years of age [1].

Examining the Relationships Between Sleep Physiology and the Gut Microbiome in Preclinical and Translational Research: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Examining the Relationships Between Sleep Physiology and the Gut Microbiome in Preclinical and Translational Research: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Although the associations between sleep and gut microbiome community changes have been established, it is unknown if altered sleep influences the microbiome, the microbiome influences sleep, or sleep and the microbiome mutually modulate each other and are altered by a disruption in either system.

Effect of a Daily Collagen Peptide Supplement on Digestive Symptoms in Healthy Women: 2-Phase Mixed Methods Study

Effect of a Daily Collagen Peptide Supplement on Digestive Symptoms in Healthy Women: 2-Phase Mixed Methods Study

It is important to note that all the participants were in the overweight range, which has been associated with a lower microbiome diversity [41] and therefore potentially poses an increased risk of bloating. Constipation is one of the most common digestive symptoms with a global prevalence of 14% [42]. Common causes include consuming a diet low in fiber, medication (such as iron supplements), a lack of physical activity, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota [43].

Misinformation About the Human Gut Microbiome in YouTube Videos: Cross-sectional Study

Misinformation About the Human Gut Microbiome in YouTube Videos: Cross-sectional Study

Despite the paucity of high-grade evidence on the mechanisms through which the microbiome may be reconfigured to optimize human physiology, there has been a sharp rise in videos that promote lifestyle-based strategies which purport to modify the gut microbiome for health and well-being benefits [14,15].

Microbial Ecosystem Therapeutic-2 Intervention in People With Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Phase 1, Open-Label Study

Microbial Ecosystem Therapeutic-2 Intervention in People With Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Phase 1, Open-Label Study

Recent research has been exploring the connections between mood and anxiety disorders and the gut microbiome. As such, the gut-brain axis (GBA), which consists of bidirectional signaling between the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the brain [10], has become a novel target for treatment of mood and anxiety symptoms. Studies suggest that this improvement of depressive and anxiety symptoms and severity may be related to the recolonization of the GI tract with healthy bacteria [11].

Multiscale Biology of Cardiovascular Risk in Psoriasis: Protocol for a Case-Control Study

Multiscale Biology of Cardiovascular Risk in Psoriasis: Protocol for a Case-Control Study

The skin microbiome is analyzed by shotgun metagenomics with untargeted sequencing of all microbial genomes [19]. Two 4-mm skin punch biopsies are taken under local anesthesia, including one from active psoriatic skin and one from clinically healthy skin neighboring the psoriatic biopsy area with a minimum distance of 2 cm from the psoriasis biopsy. The biopsy locations have the same priority for body sites as the skin swabs.
