The evaluation was divided into 2 parts. A 45-item questionnaire in the German language was provided to the participants after the testing of the GENIE mobile app. The questionnaire is structured into the categories: first impression, contents, app layout, usability, use, and willingness to pay. The categories, first impression, contents, and usability consist of an excerpt from Thielsch et al, 2017 [22] and the System Usability Scale by Brooke [23], respectively.

The enrollment form collects participants’ baseline sociodemographic data, history of ART, strategies for taking ART, assessment of their adherence with the SMAQ, depression screening, stigma, an evaluation of their satisfaction with the health services provided at the study center, and a measurement of their knowledge about ART and adherence. For participants allocated to the self-designed messages arm, we also register their created messages in REDCap.

The lack of comprehensive and unified evaluation frameworks limited the scope and depth of conclusions the field could draw regarding Gen AI’s capabilities in mental health. The psychoeducation capabilities of Gen AI in providing information related to mental health received the most evidence. This could be related to the single approach of using zero-shot prompting that was shared among almost all studies in this review.

The survey was developed using a co-design approach with members of the Physician Think Tanks and was informed by the Benefits Evaluation Framework, benchmark survey data, and relevant literature. The survey underwent testing with the Physician Think Tank members to refine its topics, content, and wording. It was available from January to March 2023, with biweekly reminders sent to encourage participation.
