For the main aim of training a model to predict early dropouts, data were drawn from the i Can Quit app arm of a 2-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing i Can Quit with the NCI Quit Guide app for smoking cessation, with full protocol details previously described [26].

In a large 2-arm randomized trial, i Can Quit was compared with Quit Guide, a USCPG-based smartphone app. At the 12-month follow-up, i Can Quit was 1.5 times more efficacious than Quit Guide for smoking cessation among 2415 adults who smoked (36% racial or ethnic minority groups) from all 50 US states [35]. The i Can Quit study was the first full-scale randomized controlled trial with long-term follow-up to show that a smartphone app was efficacious for smoking cessation.
