In this study, we recruited AUIs from a consumer database, which covered the majority of individuals who purchased an IQOS device. The IQOS Consumer Database is a database of registered IQOS consumers in the United States. These consumers entered the database by voluntarily registering their devices either at the point of sale or later by themselves. Based on the number of devices registered and sold, we estimated that approximately 70% of IQOS consumers were included in the IQOS Consumer Database.

In September 2021, the US ITC banned the import of IQOS into the United States, which took effect in November 2021 [9]. As of March 2024, IQOS is still not available in the United States, although PMI recently reached an agreement with BAT to resolve all ongoing patent infringement litigation [10], which will result in resuming sales of IQOS in the United States.

Characterizing Heated Tobacco Products Marketing on Instagram: Observational Study
Produced by Philip Morris International (PMI), I Quit Ordinary Smoking (IQOS) is an HTP with a leading market share [1]. Unlike e-cigarettes that use heated liquid, IQOS uses real tobacco leaves that contain toxins and harmful substances [2]. Globally, there is increasing usage of IQOS. According to PMI’s 2020 third-quarter estimation, the number of total IQOS users increased from 8.8 million to 16.4 million during a 2-year interval [3].

IQOS use patterns are classified according to the current consumption as either exclusive (no other product than IQOS), dual (IQOS and 1 more product), and poly (IQOS and ≥2 products) use, irrespective of relative consumption levels.
