The Use of Natural Language Processing Methods in Reddit to Investigate Opioid Use: Scoping Review
The magnitude of these numbers highlights the need for a strong surveillance infrastructure, including systems that support tracking trends in drug use and emerging patterns in the drug supply chain, as well as a good understanding of the experiences of, challenges of, and sources of support for people who use opioids, to inform a timely and effective response to this ongoing epidemic.

Digital Social Media, Youth, and Nonmedical Use of Prescription Drugs: The Need for Reform
Indeed, misuse has led to a marked increase in US public and private health care expenditures, estimated up to $72.5 billion in direct costs annually [8-10]. Prescription drug abuse also disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, including rural groups, low-income groups, those subject to sexual victimization or dating violence, those with a history of mental illness, and those with a history of substance abuse disorders [5,6,11-13].
