In this paper, we describe our process for developing a direct recruitment protocol for use in gay dating apps that we implemented for a cooperative program project called Comprehensive Adolescent Research and Engagement Studies (CARES), which is one of 3 program projects and a coordinating center that comprises the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN; Clinical Trials.gov NCT03134833) [18].

To further demonstrate the effectiveness of early antiretroviral therapy on infants, a large multicenter phase 3 trial, National Institute of Child Health and Development HIV Prevention Trials Network 040, conducted by our team of investigators revealed that c ART reduced intrapartum HIV transmission by 50% [19] in high-risk HIV-exposed infants whose mothers did not receive c ART during pregnancy.

The EDC system for ATN CARES incorporates multiple functions summarized above: data collection, mobile phone-based intervention delivery, and real-time data access for timely data quality monitoring and decision making that pertains to participant care. Most mobile EDC systems utilized in the past did not have multiple functions [21]. The ATN CARES population also provides opportunities to highlight the benefits and limitations of current mobile EDC systems.
