Then, participants consumed a fixed liquid meal (Ensure Plus, Abbott Nutrition; 900 kcal in 660 g of fluid: 30% fat, 15% protein, and 55% carbohydrate) from –5 to 0 minutes. To capture GLP-1 and insulin responses to the fixed meal, 2 ml blood samples were drawn at +5, +15, and +30 minutes. Momentary ratings were completed immediately before each blood draw.

We involved individuals from 3 stakeholder groups, namely, family dementia caregivers, health care professionals (general practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses), and Alzheimer Society representatives.

On the basis of a power analysis with the G*Power software [22] and starting from a 2-sided t test with a significance level of α=.05 and a test power of 80%, we determined that a medium-size effect of approximately Cohen d=0.64 can be achieved with a corresponding sample size of 39 participants per group.
