Job Vacancy: Web Developer, with potential to become CTO

(Posted Oct 24, 2013) JMIR publications at the University Health Network (UHN) is looking for a young motivated individual to work with a team of top scientists and help in the development of various web-based applications for scientific publication, communication and research. For this job we will consider experienced professionals but also recent graduates who are looking to get some cutting edge experience in software development in an entrepreneurial research setting.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials and qualities:• University Degree or equivalent certification in Computer (or Computer related) Sciences o Ruby on RAILSo Javascript, AJAXo Experienced in all aspects of the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) solution stacko Regular expressionso Knowledge of XML (in particular for document markup, e.g. NLM-DTD)o System administration in the Linux environment• Able to work efficiently in both team and individual settings• Motivated to work on large complex projects• Self-directed and disciplined• Excellent communication skills (oral and in writing)

The following assets will make candidates stand out:

• Experience using cloud-based services (ie, Amazon Web Services) • Express keen interest in open access publishing and reinventing science communication• Interest in social media• Have some experience working in a research setting and/or entrepreneurial setting• Big Data Analytics• Prior exposure to OJS/OCS (Open Journal Systems, Open Conference Systems)

Workload and Salary

The Software Developer will be a full-time employee of JMIR publications paid an annual salary to commensurate with qualifications. The position is based in downtown Toronto, but we are willing to discuss a teleworking arrangement or working from home for 1 day/wk.

Term

One-year contract. Candidates who excel may stay and grow into a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) role.
