JMIR Publications Launches Video Knowledge Translation Services

“SciComm Reel” and “Author Video” offerings now available for authors

[Toronto, August 31, 2021] Continuing our journey to create more open and equitable scientific discourse, JMIR Publications is pleased to expand the Knowledge Translation (KT) suite of services, adding Author Video and SciComm Reels to our catalog. These services are designed in line with the Canadian Institute for Health Research and World Health Organization’s definition of KT; as such, the results are digestible by research colleagues, policy makers, funders, and the broader public. For researchers interested in showcasing their work to their colleagues, studies have shown that an article’s citation impact can be proxied by the social media buzz it receives shortly after publication. These KT services capitalize on making a project or methodology immediately accessible to the busy researcher who might be interested in the content, but limited by the time required to read the full article.

So, what are these new offerings?

Both video formats are short-form presentations of a research project or new technology, covering the key methods and most novel findings in plain language. The Author Video service focuses on the researcher and the story behind the work: what inspired the project, what were unforeseen challenges or unexpected results, who does the research benefit and how? This approach provides important context to the project and allows the author to highlight why this work should matter to their colleagues or the public.

The SciComm Reel excels at presenting difficult scientific concepts in an easy-to-understand format. Using infographics, author soundbites, and the KT skills of Chief Ambassador Dr. Jennifer Joe, MD, this product explains the methods and impact of a research project or new technology to a non-expert audience interested in emerging technologies or products, such as medical technology investors, policy makers, and funding organizations.

Each product or research project is introduced with a voiceover from Dr. Joe, who has combined her training as a physician with her passion for scientific communication to launch and advise numerous medical technology startups. In this role, Dr. Joe often serves as the intermediary between the scientific and business communities involved.

Both of our video offerings are supported by a promotional push through JMIR and Dr. Joe’s social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn), reaching a combined audience of over 100,000 digital health stakeholders.
